Lady Cats Score 68-62 Win at Ohio Valley
01/21/10... (Box Score) The Lady Cats hit 18-22 from the free-throw line and used a 15-3 run over the final seven minutes of the first half to built a 13-point halftime lead on their way to a 68-62 road win at WVIAC foe Ohio Valley (WV) University, Thursday night. Andea Dalton (Washington, Pa.) scored 19 points and Qiuana Brown (Monroeville, Pa.) added 16 points to help the Lady Cats improve to 8-6 overall and 5-4 in the WVIAC.
Sara Trimarco (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) and Maria Montini (Irwin, Pa.) opened the game with back-to-back three-pointers for the Lady Cats, but a three-pointer by Danielle Sams at 15:02 ended a 10-3 run that put Ohio Valley up 10-9.
After Dalton's three-pointer gave the lead back to Pitt-Johnstown at 12-10, the Lady Scots answered to build a 20-14 advantage on a jumper and free-throw by Hillary Spears three minutes later.
The Lady Cats clawed their way back. Sheena Aden (Sandy Lake, Pa.) hit a pair of free-throws at 7:18 to help Pitt-Johnstown regain the lead, 24-23, and ignite a 15-3 run to close out the half. Dalton's free-throws capped the run to put the Lady Cats up, 39-26, at the intermission.
Ohio Valley outscored Pitt-Johnstown 6-2 to start the second half and cut the deficit to 41-32, but Dalton connected on her fourth three-pointer of the evening to make it 45-32, and the Lady Cats led the rest of the way.
Brown's three-pointer extended the lead to 56-37 with 8:41 to play, before the Lady Scots closed the gap to 66-60 on Kendra Benedict's basket with 24 seconds left.
However, Trimarco made two free-throws with 16 seconds left to seal the eight-point win.
Despite shooting 35.1% from the floor and getting out-rebounded 42-31, the Lady Cats got the job done by connecting on 10 three-pointers and hitting 81.8% (18-22) from the charity stripe. Ohio Valley finished the night shooting 44.2%, but the Lady Scots committed 22 turnovers and were just 9-19 from the free-throw line
Dalton led all scorers with 19 points on 6-11 shooting from the field, 4-6 from three-point range and 3-4 from the free-throw line. Brown had 16 points and three rebounds, while Aden had 11 points and four rebounds. Montini chipped in 11 points, including three three-pointers.
Sams led Ohio Valley with 16 points. Natalie Kline had 12 points and six rebounds, and Benedict added nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds for the Lady Scots, who fell to 4-8 overall and 2-7 in the WVIAC.
The Lady Cats will host a conference game against West Virginia Wesleyan College on Monday at 5:30 p.m. in the Sports Center, before traveling to Fairmont State (WV) University on Thursday.
