The Fumbler: Officially, it was a big mistake
Friday, September 11, 2009
Want a scoop? Here you go:

Friday, the Fumbler held his inaugural golf outing, "The Fumbler Fairway Invitational" at Birdsfoot Golf Club up Route 28.

The Fumbler played with his cousin, The Dribbler, and two sandbaggers they know from the Etna Elks. Naturally, their foursome won.

Anyway, the group set to tee off at 3:30 p.m. in the scramble format did not show, so The Fumbler saw these guys milling around the clubhouse and invited them to play.

The men agreed, under one condition. There were six of them, and they wanted to play as a sixsome.

No problem thought The Fumbler because the money was going to charity. As they were walking off the course for dinner about 8 p.m., The Fumbler asked, "What do you guys do for a living, anyway?"

One said, "We are high school football referees, we are working the Ford City-Valley game tomorrow night."

The Fumbler did not have the heart to tell him the game was that night. The officials did not make the game. Oh well. The Fumbler "showed up" on his first weekend with a 53-17 record, good for a .757 accuracy percentage. It's not bad because The Fumbler's toughest week is usually the first week.

Here are his thoughts on this weekend's top matchups:

Central Catholic (1-0) at Canon-McMillan (1-0), 7:30 p.m. today -- Canon-McMillan has more than standout running back-linebacker Mike Hull. But they don't have nearly as much talent overall as Central Catholic, the Post-Gazette's No. 1 WPIAL Class AAAA team. Canon-McMillan will be close for maybe a half. Winner: Central Catholic.

Mars (1-0) at Hopewell (1-0), 7 p.m. today -- Hopewell installed synthetic turf for this season at Tony Dorsett Stadium. That is bad news for opponents because Hopewell running back Rushel Shell might be even faster on the turf. Winner: Hopewell.

North Allegheny (1-0) at Mt. Lebanon (1-0), 7:30 p.m. today -- Mt. Lebanon had one of its worst seasons in school history last year (2-8). The Blue Devils look better this year, but North Allegheny looks like a top-five team in Class AAAA. Winner: North Allegheny.

Pine-Richland (1-0) at Upper St. Clair (1-0), 7:30 p.m. today -- Pine-Richland got a win against a Class AAA team (Montour) in the season opener. A step up into AAAA won't be as much fun. Winner: Upper St. Clair.

Monessen (0-1) at Clairton (0-1), 7:30 p.m. today -- The Fumbler went to see a psychiatrist he found on Facebook. The Fumbler's head was jumbled trying to figure out Clairton's gigantic upset loss to Laurel last week. The psychiatrist told The Fumbler Clairton will rebound this week. Winner: Clairton.
